Welcome!

Dear Friends,

Along with so many others, we are preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. It can make you feel a little philosophical and certainly sensitive to the weight of history. 250 years ago, the founders hadn’t yet signed the Declaration of Independence, that bold manifesto that launched a revolution. They were upstarts, rebels, true believers in a cause they were still shaping.

The founders were followed by generations of civic leaders devoted to building a more perfect union. They faced setbacks, conflicts, war, and injustice; and they also forged progress, again and again rededicating themselves to the prospect of creating a nation more just, more prosperous than what existed before.

Each generation in this great nation has a responsibility to do its part, to make democracy a little stronger than what was inherited. In 1912, the City Club’s founders did that, turning an idea of a social club with a civic purpose into a movement, and then an institution. And we did a little of that this past year, building on the institution we inherited. Together, we completed the $12 million Guardians of Free Speech campaign; together, we strengthened the institution for generations to come.

This milestone is not just about raising money; it’s about you and all of the people across our community who believe in protecting a space where every voice can be heard.

Take a look at this annual report to the community; think about each forum you’ve attended or listened to, each one a contribution to a stronger democracy. Every question asked, every perspective shared, every connection made in our forums adds another line to the story of America’s democratic experiment.

You are a guardian of this tradition, a protector of this institution, committed to freedom of speech and listening without prejudice.

In the coming months, as America celebrates its 250th birthday, be reminded that our nation’s story is still being written and that the City Club has been part of that story for 113 years.

And as you look through our annual report to the community, see yourself in that story, standing with the City Club as a beacon for democracy and fellowship within our community, yesterday, today, and for generations to come.

Forums

At the City Club, we believe in the power of conversation to bridge divides and foster understanding. Since 1912, our forums have connected individuals, viewpoints, and actions to strengthen our community. Speakers from around the community, the nation, and the world come to the City Club to share their expertise and engage with City Club members and friends in civil, civic dialogue.

Going Beyond 1317 Euclid

At times, the community demand outsizes our forum capacity so we take the City Club offsite.

After all, City Club is a spirit, not a space. In the fall, we welcomed a record-size audience at the Huntington Convention Center for a forum with Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ketanji Brown Jackson and in December, as he wrapped his tenure asSecretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg addressed a sold-out crowd at the Mimi Ohio Theatre. In January, when the City Club lost power just before our Friday Forum with Fox News’ Juan Williams, we were able to arrange to move our audience next door to the Idea Center for the live broadcast from their studio.

Programming in Partnership

Some of the best conversations happen in partnership with others!

Once again, the City Club was proud to join the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards and welcome Ned Blackhawk, an award-winning author of “The Rediscovery of America.” And on May 22nd, along with The Cleveland Orchestra’s Mandel Opera and Humanities Festival, museum leadership from Washington D.C., New York City, and here in Ohio discussed reconciliation and repatriation.

Local Voices, Big Impact

Northeast Ohio is home to courageous individuals whose hard work changes the way we view ourselves and our community.

We are proud to host forums that feature local leaders who uplift, inspire, and empower. On January 28th, Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt reminded us all the importance of embracing a new style of leadership. And on February 28th, the women of “Project Noir,” shared their research that amplified the voices of Black women in Cleveland.

Community Responsive Conversations

There are moments when our community turns to the City Club to better understand the issues and events that are unfolding around them.

These conversations provide space where all of us can better understand the role we play in an ever-changing world. In these forums, the City Club welcomed local leadership to unpack recent executive orders on immigration, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, foreign policy, and more.

Business and Economy

Cleveland’s skyline is growing, and so is the region’s economy.

These forums gave us a chance to hear from leaders shaping the future of our economy and our communities. On February 21st, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves gave us a peek into the future of American steel manufacturing. In December 2024, Ari Weinzweig spilled the secret sauce of Zingerman’s entrepreneurial success; and Beth Hammack provided her outlook for the economy as the President & CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Tradition of Civic Engagement

At the core of the City Club’s work is a deep commitment to civic engagement where local leadership address the community, engage in dialogue, and take direct questions from the audience members.

The State of the City is one of several forums, including The State of the County and The State of the Schools, where local leadership provided updates on their progress and looked to the year ahead. On November 8th, Congressional Representatives Shontel Brown (D-11) and Max Miller (R-7) sat down to discuss the work of the 119th Congress.

Community

Support from City Club members, volunteers, and community partners made it possible to host impactful forums and foster meaningful connections in our community. The commitment of every one of our 1,000+ members is greatly appreciated.

“The City Club of Cleveland creates an important space where learning, dialogue, and community come together. Forums bring people into meaningful conversation around issues that matter, especially now when those kinds of exchanges can be harder to come by.”

Piet van Lier
Policy Matters Ohio

“City Club noontime forums are a vital part of our civic life and continuing education. Sometimes we’re inspired, sometimes provoked — but always intellectually stimulated. And the people at our lunch tables? Often as fascinating as those on the stage. The City Club of Cleveland: lifelong learning, every week.”

Education

Student engagement at the City Club has continued to grow. This year we welcomed nearly 2,000 students from 56 schools and programs to forums throughout the year. That’s 13% of our total in-person audience! And every one of those students attended for free thanks to generous support from individuals and organizations in our community. In addition to funding student participation, we added curriculum to our website created by local educators, giving teachers an easy way to use City Club forums in their classrooms. These lessons bring more students into the conversations happening on our stage. Every year, City Club Educational Engagement provides many ways for students to get involved including the Youth Forum Council, the High School Debate, the Free Speech Essay Contest, and the Mental Health Summit.

High School Debate Championship

This year’s debate championship featuring Zaid Ashruf from University School and Madeleine Burke from Hathaway Brown, drew more student attendees, giving them firsthand experience in civil discourse and free expression.

Youth Forum Council

Students from more than 15 high schools across Northeast Ohio are now part of the Youth Forum Council. Council members planned and hosted four sold-out forums on topics including cell phone policies in schools, racial disparities in education, and how young people can influence politics. Each youth-led forum showed how much students want to shape the conversations that affect their lives.

“When I first began attending City Club forums, I was still unsure if my voice had a place in civic dialogue. Two years later, the City Club has become one of the most transformative parts of my high school experience and the reason I hope to pursue a career in public service.”

Kaitlin Wang
Solon High School

“The City Club Forum is an integral part of my Honors Academy curriculum. Each month, students hear from local and national leaders and learn how to interact with professionals in a social setting. The best part is the discussion on the way home, as students reflect on what they have heard.”

Advancement

We are grateful for the generous support we received this past year from our 97 corporate partners contributing over $1 million, alongside 18 philanthropic institutions whose grants strengthened the City Club’s programming. Just as importantly, our members and individual donors contributed through their membership, presence in our conversations, and ongoing annual support. Together, this community sustains our mission to create conversations of consequence that help democracy and our community thrive.

The following gifts reflect general operating and programming contributions of $500 or more received during our 2025 fiscal year. Thank you!

Guardians of Free Speech Campaign Crosses the Finish Line

In April we surpassed our $12 million goal for the Guardians of Free Speech Campaign. With 322 gifts ranging from $10 to $1 million, our community came together to achieve this historic goal.

Special thanks to our campaign co-chairs Kristen Baird Adams, Paul Harris, and Fareed Siddiq, along with all of our committee members who worked tirelessly to achieve this success, and to the more than 100 new donors who gave first time gifts to the campaign.

As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to the impact this campaign will have on our community’s future. The Guardians of Free Speech Campaign may be complete, but our work to foster meaningful civic dialogue is ongoing. We are committed to building upon this foundation to create even more opportunities for connection, understanding, and collaborative problem-solving across our diverse community—all ages, all races, all genders, all creeds.

Financials

The City Club ended fiscal year 2025 on June 30 with a change in net assets from operations of $202,000. Revenues from forum ticket and table sales grew and contributed support from individual giving, sponsorships and grants totaled over $1.6 million. Expenses were managed to budget. The City Club completed its Guardians of Free Speech Campaign raising over $12 million.
